Summer, with its romper suits, cute wedge sandals, quick buns, and ponytails seems like a distant memory to us now. Instead, here we are heading into winter looking at the days of sweater vests, chunky knee-high boots, teased tresses, and whimsical waves stretching ahead of us.
Waves. They never go out of fashion and have been one of the top 2021 long hair trends. Whether they’re tousled and bob-length or cascading past your shoulders, we never stop falling in love with them.
If you’re naturally blessed with wavy hair, we salute you. Now is your time to let them loose and shine. But if you’re a fine-haired queen casting an envious eye in their direction, stop. Those playful waves and soft tendrils can be yours too.
Kim Gueldner, celebrity stylist and mother of all things Voël, takes us through her 6 Step Guide.
Step 1: Vamp up the Volume
Let’s start with the fundamentals. For gorgeous wavy hair, fine hair needs volume. Whether you’re going for fresh and playful, or long and sultry your fly-away locks need some support. The way forward is extensions. Voël extensions are designed especially for fine-haired clients who want to look gorgeous, but natural and will give you plenty of extra volume to achieve a sumptuous wavy look.
Step 2. Get Some Air
Whether your hair is naturally wavy, or straight with extensions, air-drying is the best way to keep your hair in great condition and protect it from unnecessary damage. Don’t touch or fiddle with your hair while it’s drying - there will be plenty of opportunities to get hands-on later.
Step 3: Feed Your Hair
Once dry, it’s time to nourish your hair. I usually go for Living Proof Nourishing Cream. It’s great for waves and curls because it blocks humidity to protect from them frizz, and smooths your hair without weighing it down, keeping your waves plump and perky.
Step 4. Brush and Blow
Now it’s time to start styling your hair. For this next step, you’re going to want to grab a round brush and your hairdryer. A great brush for fine to medium hair is the Ibiza Hair Medium Round Brush. I also use Elchim hairdryers.
Rough dry your hair so it’s about 70% dry. Avoid over-drying it or damaging your hair by holding the nozzle too close - keep it at least an inch away from your hair.
Divide your hair and repeat, pulling down gently with your brush as you go.
Step 5. Get Curling
OK. Now you’re ready to get curling. If you’re new to this, I’d recommend following the steps below with the iron switched off first to give you a chance to become comfortable with the technique without scolding your hands. (They say beauty is pain, but there’s really no need to go that far)!
The key to getting a great wave is all about the positioning of your iron: always keep the barrel of the iron pointing down. This means, holding the iron up when curling the right or “easy side,” and bringing your arm up over your head - not in front of you - when curling the left or “hard side.”
Secondly, remember to always wrap your hair away from your face and behind the iron.
For a loose wave, a 1 ¼ inch barrel is perfect, smaller if you’re looking for a tighter wave. As far as curling irons go, I’m a fan of T3.
Step 6. Finish with a Flourish
Now you’re ready to put the final touches to your look with some finishing spray. I really like Unite’s TEXTURIZA Texturizing Spray which is dry and weightless and yet does a fantastic job of keeping your waves perfectly pert and in place.
That’s it. You are now ready to stun with waves for days!
Enjoy! You deserve it!
